The Cities without Borders workshops delve into the complexities of 21st century megacities. Urban Agglomerations of our times can generate dominant shares of national productions with economic and spatial impressive growth rates. Such resource concentrations translate in the unequal landscapes we know particularly from less regulated cities in the developing world. Urban Planning but also architecture possesses a social responsibility to attempt to close the gap between the world of haves and havenots. We have chosen extreme case studies for further investigations to investigate the possibilities of visionary architectural projects or new planning systems that erode the rigidness of national borders. The Cities without borders are going to take place in Tijuana - San Diego (2010), Hong Kong - Shenzhen (2011), and Brazzaville - Kinshasa (2012).

The first edition of Cities without Borders workshop line is held in September 2010 as joint effort of two host universities, the Universidad Iberoamericano Tijuana and San Diego State University. During 2,5 weeks on-site a group of up to 50 students will work in two parallel workshop teams both sides of the border to relate top down inputs (lectures from various agents, seminars, discussion moments) to bottom-up experiences (site excursions, contact with local representatives, grassroots and NGOs). An elaborate selection of case study locations will allow a thorough investigation of each city but also put one into the context of the other reality beyond the border. With such an approach we hope to generate final products that reflect the workshop ideology as to say being flexible in scale and discipline. Results will be displayed in Tijuana, San Diego, Eindhoven and Lausanne.
